“Leyla Güven began a peaceful action, and she did so to put emphasis on peace and democracy in Turkey.”
HDP co-chair Sezai Temelli visited DTK co-chair and HDP Hakkari MP Leyla Güven at her house Monday evening.
Leyla Güven has been on hunger strike for 124 days, demanding the end of the isolation against Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.
A number of HDP deputies and party members accompanied Temelli. Because of the health problems Leyla Güven has been suffering from, Temelli received information from her daughter Sabiha Temizkan.
Temelli spoke to the press after the visit and said: “Leyla Güven has been fasting for 124 days. Four months have gone by. During these four months we repeated the same thing we said on day one. We have said one very clear thing: Leyla Güven began a peaceful action, and she did so to put emphasis on peace and democracy in Turkey. This is what she is still doing.
She is demanding the implementation of Turkey’s own laws as to the rights of prisoners, including Mr. Öcalan. She is demanding that he could receive visits from his family and lawyers.”
Temelli added: “The issue of isolation is a critical issue. Ending isolation means beginning to solve the Kurdish question. The hunger strike is a non-violent action. As Leyla, 335 prisoners are on hunger strike in many prisons in Turkey. They are being harassed, punished. The hunger strike is going on all over the world. Nasır Yağız is on his 111st day of fast in Hewler. Likewise 14 activists are on hunger strike in Strasbourg and one in Wales. All our friends have the same demand.”
Temelli ended his remarks by calling on the Minister of Justice. “The Minister of Justice – he said – cannot violate the law. I ask him to act as soon as possible. I call on everyone to do their part.”
